Plumbing

Today we met Joanne, the designer for the first time. She was fun and friendly, and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know us.

We met at Atchison Plumbing, and our task was to look at all of the plumbing fixtures and decide whether to keep the standards or select upgrades.

I hadn't anticipated making many upgrades, and for the most part we decided to go with the standard bathtubs, sinks, and faucets.

We did upgrade some hardware in the powder room (Scott had picked this faucet out weeks ago) and in the ensuite bathroom as well.

We also upgraded some of the toilets, which was relatively inexpensive but supposedly will make a big difference, so we were told.

Getting Started

We started meeting with the builder in the fall. We spent several weeks developing a floor plan and design for the home.

Rick was very helpful as we went through this planning phase. He listened to Scott and I discuss elements that were important to us and did a great job of implementing our ideas into the plans.

He encouraged us to draw pictures and bring in photos to get a clear picture of what we wanted in a home. He advised us to spend time carefully planning out the details in advance, so that we wouldn't need to make (costly) modifications in the future.

After spending approximately two months in the planning phase, we signed the contract just before Christmas, and the plans were sent to the City for approval.

Our Decision

Last fall, Scott and I planned to buy a house. After months of searching, we decided that the right house for our family wasn't on the market, and that we should explore building.

After meeting with a few builders and scoping out the available lots and plans, we chose to build with Carolina Homes.

We are very excited about this huge undertaking we have started. We feel like we have already learned a lot, and know that we have much learning ahead of us.

We have started this blog to document our experience in building with Carolina Homes. We are doing this for two reasons.

First, we would like to have a record of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Second, we feel that sharing our experiences will help others who may be considering building their own home with Carolina.

We hope you enjoy following along.
